Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope hasn’t been thrilled with his team’s performance over the last two games. The Wildcats have dropped back-to-back contests in SEC action to drop below .500 in league play.
Pope let those frustrations out during a passionate locker room explosion at halftime against Ole Miss. He then showed up to his postgame press conference with a rather noticeable cut on his hand.
The ‘Cats have fallen in two straight games over the last week of play. The first setback came at home against Arkansas in former coach John Calipari’s return to Rupp Arena. They then fell on the road to the Rebels on Tuesday.
The losses put a damper on Mark Pope’s fast start, which included wins over Duke, Gonzaga, Florida, and Tennessee. Now, the Wildcats are looking to get back on track.
Kentucky trailed Arkansas the entire second half of an 89-79 defeat. The struggles continued in Oxford as the Rebels jumped out to a 54-31 first half advantage and never looked back. The team hasn’t held a lead in more than 60 consecutive minutes of basketball action.
An infuriated Pope admitted to locker room vandalism after his most recent loss. He also showed up to his presser with a laceration on his hand.

Jack Pilgrim of Kentucky Sports Radio broke down the emotional scene in a story this week. The coach was simply looking to spark a positive response from his team.
“We like to burn white hot — we know the way we coach, the way I coach, you get moments where you can burn white hot. If you pick and choose them carefully, the messaging can be really powerful…
“We’re taking some opportunities to burn a little white hot, but we’re trying to be really, really intentional about them and not be emotionally belligerent. This game is just begging for you to be angry just because you’re angry, and to be frustrated just because you’re frustrated, and to lash out at your players just because you’re so angry and so frustrated. There is a place for that, but the payoff on that has limited short-term returns. They have to be positioned well.
“There may or may not have been some completely destroyed furniture in the locker room recently… That’s just part of it. It’s got to be for a purpose. It just can’t be an emotional release…”
-Mark Pope
Mark Pope says the outburst was used as a motivational tactic. He wants to be strategic with those eruptions. It appeared to work as the Wildcats closed that 23-point halftime disadvantage to just 14 points by game’s end.
As far as the bloody hand, he refused to confirm whether or not the vandalism was connected. He simply said his team wasn’t “living up to the standard.”
We’ll soon see if Kentucky can harness that emotion and put it to positive use on the basketball court. The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday when they host last-placed South Carolina.
