Former North Carolina football star Marquise Williams will not support his alma mater next season. He announced a boycott in a cryptic message on social media.
Most believe he was hinting at the constant drama that’s followed Bill Belichick to Chapel Hill. A lack of context provided little clarity into his claims.
Williams spent five years with the program after signing as a 2011 recruit. He redshirted his freshman campaign before seeing major action in the four seasons to follow.
Williams threw for nearly 8,000 yards as a Tar Heel, posting back-to-back 3,000-yard seasons to end his career. He went out on a high note by leading the team to 11 wins and an appearance in the ACC Title Game.
Those seasons came under a previous UNC staff. Williams doesn’t seem fond of new leadership.

I will not be attending any UNC football games this year! The things I’m hearing man I would have never thought💔

The passer posted a cryptic message to social media with little context. It hinted at potential locker room drama, though no one truly knows what Williams has heard or seen.
It could be nothing more than a player failing to mesh with the current regime. Williams was close to the program under Brown. He was welcomed back to campus as a fan favorite.
On Saturday, I was honored as one of Kenan Legends! Thank you @UNCFootball and everybody that welcomed me and my family back home! #GoHeels🐏🐏🐏 pic.twitter.com/1AqeW7EhnN

Belichick has no ties to Williams, or really North Carolina football in general outside of his father’s three-year stint as a Tar Heel assistant in the 1950s.
Does Williams simply seem like an outsider with the new boss, or is his boycott rooted in a deeper issue?
Drama follows Bill Belichick.
His debut season was filled with off-field storylines, many of which were linked to his much younger fiancée, Jordon Hudson.
Fans and donors said she was too involved. At one time, she was rumored to be banned from the facilities. It was all an ugly reflection on the head coach and his intended direction of the team.
Everything but football was the topic of conversation in 2025.
The negative attention continued into the season as North Carolina was annihilated by TCU in Belichick’s first game. The Tar Heels would finish 4-8, ending the year on a three-game skid against instate rivals.
During that forgettable season, accusations of favoritism inside the program leaked.
Parents of players called the locker room “toxic.” They alleged that Belichick-recruited players received preferential treatment.
According to several sources, some Belichick-recruited transfers have preferential parking for themselves and their parents, as well as more tickets for games. Khmori House and Thaddeus Dixon played for Belichick’s son, Steve Belichick, at the University of Washington. Their names come up repeatedly when talking to sources about preferential treatment. Dixon’s family has field access on game days, something that no other family is believed to have.
According to sources, there’s a board in the UNC football facility that lists people who have missed workouts and class. Some Belichick-recruited players repeatedly show up on the list but have not had their playing time affected.

GM Michael Lombardi recently appeared on the Pat McAfee Show to nix the “fake stories” that overshadowed Year 1. He suggests the storylines were created by rivals out of fear.
Marquise Williams is not a rival. He is one of UNC’s own. Is he suggesting that new drama has infiltrated an already discombobulate North Carolina program? Some think so.
We won’t truly know unless the quarterback expands upon his claims. For now, he’s cutting his support. Don’t expect to see him in Chapel Hill this football season.
