The Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team found itself in the midst of an awful 53-game losing streak as it entered a Sunday afternoon matchup against VMI. Despite a valiant effort, that skid continued.

The Hawks had already dropped the first three games of the series. They went 0-48 the year prior after finishing the 2023 campaign with back-to-back defeats. In all, 53 straight losses.

Across those first three contests of 2025, UMES had been outscored 30-6. In the finale, though, they held a slight 6-5 lead through five innings of play. It represented their best chance of ending the losing streak thus far.

A late game collapse would end those hopes. VMI outscored the Hawks 9-2 across the last four frames. That included a four-run outburst in their final at-bat. The Keydets left with a 14-8 win that was much closer than the score would indicate.

Not only did Maryland Eastern Shore fall to 0-4 on the season, and 0-54 in their last 54 games, but they also dropped to 0-16 all-time against VMI. Every losing streak remains intact.

The setback didn’t stop the Hawks from celebrating their most recent performance. While UMES was outnumbered on the scoreboard, they did outhit their opponent.

That was a stark change after being outhit 34-15 across the first three contests. Progress! Still, it wasn’t necessarily celebration-worthy.

Maryland Eastern Shore held a lead halfway through its most recent matchup. Unfortunately, their lengthy losing skid continued. The Hawks are celebrating the small things with wins proving hard to come by. Their next opportunity to end the streak will come on Saturday against Towson.
