The Maryland football team was beaten soundly by Big Ten rival Indiana on Saturday to fall to 4-4 on the season. Not many stayed on to watch the final 15 minutes.

The stands emptied as the Terps‘ deficit grew. Those that did remain demanded the program move on from Mike Locksley.

The Hoosiers entered the matchup with a No. 2 national ranking. Despite being 21-point underdogs, Maryland came in with an upset-minded outlook.

Fans were eager to see a Homecoming victory. It was said to be a sold-out crowd, though it did appear attendees got a late start to their seats.

Those hopes of a surprise win were diminished relatively early.

Indiana beat Maryland in Big Ten football action.

The Terps got on the board first with an early field goal. From there, it was all Hoosiers.

Indiana ripped off a string of 20 straight points to take a 17-point lead into halftime. They then outscored the home team 35-7 across the final two quarters.

The contest, which Indiana won 55-10, was one of utter domination. The Hoosiers rushed for 367 yards. Maryland totaled only 293 yards of offense. The Terrapins were nearly tripled up in first downs.

The loss was Maryland’s fourth straight. Fans were not happy with the product put on the field.

Most left before the third quarter ended with the Terps trailing by 31 points.

Those that stuck around SECU Stadium to witness the final moments voiced their frustrations from the stands.

“Fire Locksley” chants were heard raining down from the students’ section throughout the game. It’s put the school in a bit of a dilemma.

The head coach is now 37-45 across eight seasons at Maryland. How much longer will he be employed?

What is Mike Locksley’s buyout?

The coach’s seat grew warm after last year’s 4-8 campaign. It’s now scorching hot with the team riding a four-game losing skid.

Locksley is set to be paid more than $6 million this season. He is locked into a contract through 2027 after signing an extension in April of 2023.

Since inking that deal, the Terrapins are 16-17. They’re losers of 12 of their last 14 Big Ten games. Fans believe it’s time for a change.

To fire Locksley without cause, Maryland would owe the coach $13 million. That number is not as high as some others seen around the conference.

Penn State, for example, paid James Franklin nearly $50 million to leave. Still, it’s not a small number by any means.

Maryland will soon have to make a decision on the future of its football program. Will the Terps stick with Mike Locksley, or will he be fired by season’s end?
