The New York Mets are, year-in and year-out, one of the weirdest teams in all of sports. The 2024 season has been another example of that, and the weirdness centers around the McDonald’s character, Grimace.

Last Wednesday, the fictional large purple creature threw out the first pitch  prior to the Amazin’s game against the with the Mets sitting at 28-37 and well out of the playoff picture as we inch closer to July.  The Mets haven’t lost since.

Grimace has become a huge meme in the baseball world, as his first pitch has helped spur on a seven-game winning streak for the New York Mets that has them now at 35-37 and just a half-game out of a playoff position.  Mets fans are wearing Grimace sweatshirts in the stands, and it’s currently the team’s rallying cry.

When Grimace threw out the first pitch, it wasn’t even a deal with the McDonald’s corporate office. Rather, it was a marketing deal with local McDonald’s that are independently owned and advertise with each other. But, now, corporate McDonald’s is getting in on the fun.

The official Twitter of McDonald’s, with over 4.7 million followers, is now all the way in on the Mets bandwagon.

In all seriousness, the Mets aren’t winning just due to Grimace. They’re playing much better baseball than they were in a disastrous May. They were a horrific 9-19 in May after a respectable 15-14 start to the season through April. Truth be told, the Mets are probably more like the team they were in March and April, hovering around .500, than the terrible team in May and fantastic team in June.

Who knows, maybe the power of Grimace will help the Mets win their first World Series since 1986.
