The New York Mets played a fantastic final four-plus months of the season to overcome a terrible start and make a deep run in the postseason all the way to the NCLS. The future seems much brighter in New York than it did a year before.
The Mets have been big spenders ever since owner Steve Cohen bought the team prior to the 2021 season. With a ton of money coming off the books and the Mets looking to contend now, New York Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns put the league on notice at a Wednesday press conference put the rest of the league on notice when it comes to potential free agent spending.
The Mets came oh-so-close to winning their first National League pennant since 2015, losing in the NCLS to the Dodgers in six games. While much of the pitching that got them there will be free agents this offseason, they have a really strong core of position players. Francisco Lindor had an MVP-type season, Brandon Nimmo is a stalwart in the outfield, and youngsters Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez should be stars for years to come. Pete Alonso is a free agent, but many expect him to be retained.
It’s a solid free agent class headlined by Yankees slugger Juan Soto and Orioles ace Corbin Burnes. Soto has long been rumored to be a target of Steve Cohen and the Mets, and a bidding war between the Yankees and Mets is expected. Meanwhile, the Mets need to add top-of-the-rotation starting pitching to their roster as well to form a one-two punch with Kodai Senga, who was limited by injury this year.
With over $150 million in salary coming off the books, the Mets are poised to spend a ton of money. Just listen to David Stearns.
"The entirety of the player universe is potentially accessible to us. That's an enormous opportunity. I envision us taking advantage of that opportunity and being aggressive in certain spaces."
