Kam Craft is the perfect example of how the grass is not always greener in the transfer portal. He left a college basketball team that finished the regular season undefeated for the last-place team in the ACC.

Oops!

In an era of college basketball where athletes rarely stay at the same school for more their entire career, Craft has not stayed in one place for more than two years. His most recent decision was a big mistake.

Who is Kam Craft?

As a native of Atlanta, Georgia, Craft was rated as a four-star prospect in the recruiting Class of 2022. He was ranked as the No. 4 player at his position and a top-75 player overall.

The 6-foot-6 wing received offers from Drake, Texas Tech, N.C. State, South Carolina, Maryland, Iowa and Xavier. The Musketeers ultimately received his commitment.

Kam Craft averaged 2.6 points and 1.5 rebounds in 6.7 minutes over 15 games as a freshman. He missed the entire 2023-24 season due to an injury. At that point, it was time to move on.

Craft entered the transfer portal in search of a fresh start and landed at Miami of Ohio. The Redhawks won 25 games last season. It was a breakout year for their newest addition!

Not only did Craft average a career-high 13.6 points per game, he shot 43.1% from beyond the arc.

That led him to re-enter the transfer portal. He wanted to play for a more prestigious program on a higher level of competition. Georgia Tech gave him that opportunity.

The college basketball transfer portal is a gamble.

Kam Craft is a former four-star recruit who made his mark as a mid-major player. His decision to transfer back up to “better” tier of college basketball is not unique or unusual. It happens all the time. Every year.

However, that does not mean it is going to work out.

Craft played 21.4 minutes per game for the Yellow Jackets during the 2025-26 season with an average of 7.3 points per game. His numbers dropped in every major statistical category. He started only 14 of 29 games after he started all 34 games for the Redhawks.

Not only that, but Georgia Tech finished dead last in the ACC standings at 2-9 in conference play and 11-19 overall. Miami, on the other hand, finished the regular season at 31-0.

Craft could be a conference champion on the 21st undefeated team in college basketball history if he did not enter the transfer portal for the second year in a row. Instead, he was an unimpressive afterthought on one of the worst teams in Georgia Tech history.

Let this be a warning! The grass is not always greener.
