Michael Vick is not messing around when it comes to his first year at Norfolk State. He reportedly fired his defensive coordinator and two position coaches from his staff.

This move comes after just seven games.

It is not uncommon for college football coaches to be fired at this point in the season but that does not usually happen during the first year. The Spartans will not settle.

Michael Vick won’t.

As of this writing, the ouster of these three coaches has not yet been announce by the university. They were first reported by OffScript_Tv on X, the self-proclaimed ‘Voice of HBCU Sports.’

Defensive coordinator Terence Garvin and safties coach Jameel ‘Jabo’ Smith are expected to be out if they are not already. The third coach has yet to be identified.

Assuming this is true, it is a massive shakeup for Michael Vick.

Norfolk State allowed 34.7 points per game and over 425 yards per game in each of its first seven games. The defense has struggled to stop the run and proved completely incapable of stopping the pass.

The Spartans are unable to keep the opposing offense off of the field. Its opponents average 32 minutes of possession per game and convert ~50% of their attempts on third down.

That won’t cut it. Norfolk State dropped to 1-6 with a loss to Wofford on Saturday.

Norfolk State will try something new.

Garvin joined the Spartans’ staff with Vick. He previously held the role of co-defensive coordinator at Florida Memorial.

The 34-year-old played six years in the NFL with the Steelers, Redskins, Seahawks, Dolphins and 49ers prior to his coaching career.

Smith also followed Garvin to Virginia with Vick. He previously served as the other co-defensive coordinator at Florida Memorial.

Both guys are now out. It is unclear as to who will take their place.
