True freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood shone in his debut for the Michigan Wolverines against UNLV. But his first real test came in Week 2 when the Wolverines hit the road to take on the Oklahoma Sooners.
As it turned out, Underwood would have to battle not only the Sooners in Norman, but also his own teammates.
The 18-year-old, who is already among the highest-paid quarterbacks in all of college football, found himself needing to be separated from the running back Justice Haynes as the two got into it on the Wolverines’ sideline.
The argument came just prior to the half when Michigan kicker Dominic Zavada missed a chip shot field goal that would’ve cut the Oklahoma lead to 7-3.

Bryce Underwood And Justice Haynes Exchange Words On Michigan Sideline
Underwood came to the sidelines and made a beeline to Haynes, yelling at him in the process. Haynes, who transferred to Michigan from Alabama in the offseason, didn’t take too kindly to whatever Underwood had to say. The two began jawing back and forth and needed to be separated by teammates and coaches.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma marched back down the field in under three minutes to take a 14-0 lead into the half. Underwood finished the half 5-of-10 for 76 yards, while Haynes had just 36 yards on 12 carries.
On one hand, it’s nice to see the young quarterback speak up. That’s the only way to earn the respect of your teammates. But we have no idea what was said, and he probably could’ve approached Haynes in a more hostile manner.
If Michigan is going to come back in the game or have a successful season, it needs Underwood and Haynes on the same page. And that clearly wasn’t the case at this moment.
