The Michigan Wolverines football program has a lot invested in the future of freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood.

Not only is Michigan’s future success partially reliant on Underwood’s development. But the Wolverines literally invested eight figures into Underwood when they signed the then-high school recruit to a historic NIL deal.

You would think, given that fact, that Michigan and its coaching staff would do everything necessary to ensure that Underwood succeeded at the college level.

However, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Sherrone Moore And Michigan Had Now Dedicated QB Coach In 2025

New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham recently joined The Triple Option podcast for an interview with host Urban Meyer, who also served as Whittingham’s predecessor at Utah, during which time Whittingham acted as the defensive coordinator.

During part of the interview, the pair discussed Underwood and what he needs to do to improve in 2025. That’s when Whittingham revealed an almost unfathomable piece of information.

“First of all, from what I understand, there was no dedicated quarterback coach working with him on a daily basis, which has to happen,” Whittingham said. “You’ve got a young man, 17 years old, he didn’t turn 18 ’til like midseason, and so he’s a guy who really could’ve been in high school last year as far as his age.”

I’m sorry … what?

A quick look at the 2025 Michigan coaching staff shows that Whittingham was not lying. Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsay also served as the Wolverines’ quarterbacks coach.

In the past, that wouldn’t have been an uncommon setup. But given the lack of limits on staff size these days and Michigan’s financial might, it’s insane to see the Wolverines not having a dedicated QB coach on staff. Almost every major program in the country has one, including No. 1-ranked Indiana.

For all his talent, Underwood is a remarkably raw player. So it’s important for Michigan to give him as many resources as possible to reach his ceiling, something it apparently wasn’t doing in 2025.
