The Michigan Wolverines will face the UCONN Huskies in the 2026 college basketball national championship game. Neither program is a stranger to appearing in the title matchup.
These schools have combined for 13 previous NCAA Tournament Finals trips, though their results in those championship games couldn’t be more different.
One side is perfect in title bouts. The other has had limited success.
Michigan, UCONN records in national title games.
The Huskies are 6-0 in six trips to the championship contest. Their most recent win came in the 2024 March Madness field.
The Wolverines are 1-6 across seven all-time appearances in the finals. They hope to buck a recent losing skid and emerge victorious on Monday night.
Here, we’ll take a look at each of those previous results starting with Michigan’s first matchup in the 1960s.
Michigan Wolverines (1-6)
1965
The Wolverines were the No. 1 team in the field following a Big Ten championship run in the 1964-65 season. Michigan buzzed through Dayton, Vanderbilt, and Princeton at the NCAA Tournament to make the title game.
It then ran into John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty.
The defending champion Bruins won the final game 91-80 to pick up its second-ever national championship. They’d quickly add to that total with eight titles over the next nine seasons.
Michigan wouldn’t get back to the finals for another decade.
1976
Michigan finished second to Indiana in the Big Ten race in the 1975-76 campaign, losing twice to the Hoosiers in the regular season. They’d get a chance at revenge in the national title.
The Wolverines beat Wichita State, Notre Dame, Missouri, and Rutgers to book a ticket to the finals. It set up a third matchup with top-ranked Indiana.
Unfortunately for Michigan, the result would be the same as the previous two. The Hoosiers used a huge second half to overcome an early deficit, outscoring the Wolverines 57-33 after halftime.
The loss pushed UM to 0-2 in championship games.
1989
Michigan finally got in the win column in 1989 with a championship victory over Seton Hall. That outcome remains one of the more controversial in NCAA Tournament history.
Trailing by one point with 10 seconds left to play, Michigan drove towards the basket for a game-winning possession. The Pirates were called for a foul, giving the Wolverines a chance to win at the free throw line.
Rumeal Robinson would sink both shots to give his team the lead. Seton Hall’s last-second three-point attempt missed to give Michigan the title.
One interesting note of the March Madness run was a coaching change that took place just before the tournament. Steve Fisher replaced Bill Frieder before the first postseason game. He then ripped off six straight wins to cut down the nets.
1992
Steve Fisher returned to the national title game three years after winning the program’s first championship. His second trip was put into motion by the Fab 5.
Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Chris Webber, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson headlined an incredible freshman class. They immediately led the program to the NCAA Tournament final.
After reeling off wins over Temple, East Tennessee State, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, and Cincinnati, the Wolverines found themselves in a title bout with Duke.
The Blue Devils had recently avoided elimination with Christian Laettner’s heroics in the Elite Eight. Michigan would be unable to knock them off.
Despite trailing 31-30 at the halftime break, Duke stormed back to outscore the Wolverines by 21 in the second half to win 71-51.
1993
Michigan made it back-to-back title trips the following year with the Fab 5 still intact. This time, they’d face North Carolina for a chance to cut down the nets.
Unfortunately, it wouldn’t come to fruition. After losing to the Wolverines earlier in the year, UNC got revenge in Round 2.
The game is best remembered for Chris Webber’s timeout. Trailing by two points in the final 20 seconds, the forward rebounded a missed free throw.
After being trapped by the North Carolina defense, he signaled for a timeout, which the Wolverines did not have. It resulted in a technical foul, allowing the Tar Heels to build their lead in a 77-71 win.
2013
Michigan waited two decades for a return to the national title game, which came in the 2013 season. The Wolverines knocked off the likes of Kansas, Florida and Syracuse to set up a championship contest with Louisville.
Despite leading at halftime, UM fell 82-76. The loss provided a sour ending to Trey Burke’s epic postseason run.
The guard averaged 15.5 points per game while adding 6.3 assists during the postseason. His NCAA Tournament was headlined by a game-tying shot in the Sweet 16 to force overtime against the Jayhawks.
Unfortunately, the team would come up just short in his final game.
2018
The 2018 Michigan squad earned a three-seed in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big Ten Tournament championship. It continued its momentum into March Madness by ripping off five straight wins.
Included in those victories were triumphs over Houston, Texas A&M, and Florida State. It positioned Michigan for a title bout with Villanova.
As it did in most every previous matchup, the program came up one win shy of cutting down the nets. The Wildcats won the game by 17 points to end the Wolverines’ championship pursuit.
It was the fifth straight championship game loss for UM. It will look to snap the skid against UCONN on Monday night.
UCONN Huskies (6-0)
1999
Each of the Huskies’ six national championship appearances have come in the last quarter century. All, to this point, have resulted in victories.
The first came in 1999 when Jim Calhoun led the program on a six-game winning streak in the ’99 NCAA Tournament. That came after the Huskies won the Big East regular season crown.
Rip Hamilton headlined the UCONN lineup, averaging 21.5 points per night to help the squad win 34 games. After knocking off Ohio State in the Final Four, Connecticut beat Duke in a championship thriller, 77-74.
2004
The 2003-04 UCONN team was led by future NBA players Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor. Each averaged more than 17 points per game in their junior years.
It resulted in a 27-win season and Big East Tournament championship. The Huskies rode that hot streak into March Madness.
UCONN beat Vermont, DePaul, Vanderbilt, and Alabama to reach the Final Four. It then narrowly escaped Duke to book a national title ticket.
There, the Huskies took down Georgia Tech to win their second championship in five years.
2011
The 2011 NCAA Tournament was headlined by UCONN star Kemba Walker. The guard helped the Huskies earn a 3-seed in the field with an incredible Big East Tournament run in which he averaged 26 points per game.
He followed it up with another insane string of performances in the Big Dance.
Walker scored 23.5 points a night in UCONN’s six wins. He helped the Huskies knock off the likes of Cincinnati, Kentucky, and Arizona to set up a national championship showdown with Butler.
UCONN won the game, 53-41. Walker scored 16 points in his final contest before moving onto the NBA.
2014
Three years after Kemba Walker’s run, the Huskies appeared in their fourth national title game. This would be the first and only under head coach Kevin Ollie.
UCONN was a 7-seed in the field. It knocked off a 1, 2, 3, and 4 seed on its way to a surprise championship appearance vs. Kentucky.
The Huskies won the game, 60-54. Guard Shabazz Napier scored more than 1/3 of the team’s points while teammate Ryan Boatright posted a 14-point night.
The victory ran UCONN’s national championship record to a perfect 4-0.
2023
UCONN was a bit of an NCAA Tournament surprise in 2023. Entering as a 4-seed, they ripped off five straight wins to set up a final matchup with 5-seed San Diego State.
Included in the Huskies victories were wins over St. Mary’s, Arkansas, Gonzaga, and Miami. Each of those games were decided by double digits.
The dominance would continue into the title bout. UCONN posted an impressive 76-59 win after jumping out to a big first half lead.
It wouldn’t take long for the program to return to the national spotlight.
2024
UCONN didn’t sneak up on anyone in its attempt to defend the title. They went 31-3 to earn a 1-seed after winning both the Big East regular season and conference tournament crowns.
Much like the postseason prior, the Huskies were dominant in the Big Dance. No game was closer than 14 points.
UCONN beat San Diego State in the Sweet 16 by 30 points. It won by 25 over Illinois in the Elite Eight. Alabama kept things a bit closer in the Final Four but still proved no test.
That victory set up a national championship matchup with top-seeded Purdue. Again, the Huskies flexed their muscles in a 75-60 title win.
The final result pushed UCONN’s national championship winning streak to six games. Will it come to an end vs. Michigan?
