Miguel Cabrera and Rich Hill amused viewers in Wednesday afternoon matchup on a close play. The two MLB veterans raced to first base on an infield grounder, with Hill barely beating his counterpart to the bag for the putout.
A clip of the two 40-plus-year-old players is now going viral on social media. Fans and media have been quick to comment.
The Pirates and Tigers faced off in interleague action this week, and it’s given us one of the best plays of the season.
After dropping Game 1 of the series, Pittsburgh looked to even things up in the final meeting of the two-game set. Left-handed starter Rich Hill got the nod on the mound in Wednesday’s series finale, and he didn’t disappoint.
The Major League journeyman pitched spectacularly, tossing six scoreless innings and striking out seven Tiger hitters. The Pirates would jump out to an early 2-0 lead and never look back.
A four-run seventh inning would be the final nail in the coffin as Pittsburgh ran away with the 8-0 victory.
But with things still tight in the bottom of the second frame, fans were provided with an all-time moment. Miguel Cabrera stepped up to the dish for Detroit and proceeded to smack a laser to the opposite side.
Pirates first baseman Carlos Santana made a diving stop, saving the ball from finding the outfield. That defensive play, however, pulled him far from the bag.
Jumping to a knee in that first/second base gap, he then found a streaking Rich Hill sprinting toward the line. What ensued was pure comedy.
Hill and Miggy had a foot race to the base, with the pitcher ultimately winning out. Keep in mind that this is a 43-year-old Rich Hill going up against a 40-year-old Miguel Cabrera.

Detroit Tigers beat writer Jason Beck wrote, “A race for the ages,” while MLB personality Ben Verlander said, “WE GOT A RICH HILL (43 years old) VS MIGUEL CABRERA (40 years old) RACE TO THE BAG!!”
It’s hard not to be enthusiastic.
