Mikaela Shiffrin is one of the great American athletes of this generation. The skier is already likely the greatest American skier of all time.
Shiffrin burst onto the national scene when at just 18 years old she won a gold Medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in the slalom. She became a breakout star of the Olympics.
But, her career was far from over. After winning her first World Cup season-long title in 2013, she won another in 2014, this time in the slalom. And, she’s just kept winning and winning. She’s won ten season-long discipline titles and five overall World Cup titles, which puts her among the elite in both categories. Shiffrin added two more Olympic medals at Pyeongchang 2018, as well.
But, she had a terrible 2022 Beijing Olympics that saw multiple crashes from her and, unfortunately, it turned into a national tragedy. But, she’s rebounded well as she chased down the all-time World Cup wins record. And, on Saturday, she overtook Swedish star Ingemar Stenmark with her 87th all-time World Cup win.
