Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who entered the season as a lame duck as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, has set his sights on his next job should the Cowboys decide to move on, with reports indicating that the Super Bowl winner is interested in the Chicago Bears job.

Given the young talent that the Chicago Bears have on the offensive side of the ball — Top 10 rookie draft picks QB Caleb Williams and WR Rome Odunze — it shouldn’t be surprising that an offensive minded head coach like Mike McCarthy would be interested in the job.

According to ESPN’s senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, McCarthy “could set his sights” on the Bears’ job, which is open following the in-season firing of former head coach Matt Eberflus.

“I’ve talked to multiple people who believe McCarthy — should he leave Dallas — could set his sights on Chicago,” Fowler reported.

“More industry sources than I expected believe McCarthy has a small chance to stay, in part because of what’s considered a weak candidate pool. But McCarthy and his entire staff are operating under expiring contracts, which complicates matters (and frees up McCarthy to look into other jobs, which I also think is entirely possible).”

McCarthy is a better coach than his reputation but probably not a good enough coach to deserve a third opportunity to lead a franchise.

In his 18 seasons as a head coach, he’s had at least 10 wins in 11 of them, an undeniably impressive mark. His critics, however, suggest that his offensive scheme has not evolved since winning a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers in 2010.

Whoever does ultimately land the Bears’ job will be tasked with getting Williams’ career on track, as the former Heisman trophy winner, who was taken #1 overall out of USC, has had a disappointing rookie season in Chicago, especially in comparison to likely Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels, who was selected one pick later.

With one game left in his rookie season with the Bears, Williams has completed 61.9% of his passes for 3,393 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He’s also carried the ball 78 times for 479 yards.
