Mike McCarthy was not happy with how the Dallas Cowboys started this weekend’s NFL game against the Atlanta Falcons. The 60-year-old head coach smashed his tablet in rage during the second quarter.
It is rare to see McCarthy show any emotion on the sideline so frustration is clearly starting to boil over for an organization that has not met expectations in recent years.
He was hired in 2020 and won 12 games in each of the last three seasons. However, Dallas has not made it past the Divisional Round in the playoffs and began 2024 at 3-4. That won’t cut it.
If the Cowboys don’t turn things around in a hurry, McCarthy could be fired sooner than later. Jerry Jones is growing impatient. As is the fanbase. They expect to win.
A slow start on Sunday did not help to inspire any confidence. Atlanta jumped out to an early lead and stuffed Dallas’ offense on 4th-and-1 inside its own 45-yard-line.
McCarthy called a timeout prior to the play to talk it over. He (and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer) dialed up an end-around to star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
It was an epic failure.
Not only did Lamb get tackled before he picked up the first down, he was brought down behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of three. The Falcons got the ball right back on downs.
McCarthy was disgusted by what he saw.

The repugnance turned to anger when the script flipped a few plays later.
Atlanta went for it on fourth down. Busted coverage resulted in a touchdown. Mike McCarthy watched the play back on his tablet, paused for a moment, and chucked it down at the ground.

Maybe he was upset with the play call. Perhaps he was upset with the poor execution.
Either way, the word “furious” would be an understated way to describe his emotions. Outraged would be another.
Mike McCarthy is sick and tired of losing!
