Mike Piazza Talks About How Tommy Lasorda Flipped On Him For Choosing To Enter Hall Of Fame With Mets

by 4 years ago

Mike Piazza’s unanimously regarded as one of the greatest catchers in the history of baseball, and he was welcomed into the arms of baseball’s elite in 2013 when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. In my opinion, Mike Piazza’s probably the second greatest catcher to ever play the game, second only to Carlton Fisk, and I’m only partial to Carlton Fisk because he’s a golf buddy of my dad and I’ve played several rounds with Carlton and gotten to know him over the years (one of the nicest pro athletes you’ll ever meet).

At the end of the day the only people with mixed feelings towards Mike Piazza are Dodgers fans, and they often feel slighted because Mike chose to enter the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown with the Mets instead of the Dodgers. This can often be a touchy subject, and in baseball you’ll even see teams throw huge contracts at players who are way past their prime with the understanding that the $$$$$ is going towards that player entering the HoF wearing the team’s uniform instead of the uniform of the team they played the bulk of their careers with.

Piazza began his career with skipper Tommy Lasorda and the Los Angeles Dodgers (1992-1998), it’s where he first rose to prominence in baseball and those were the years that got him paid down the road with the New York Metropolitans (1998-2005). So it’s perfectly understandable that Tommy Lasorda’s would be wounded by Piazza’s decision to enter Cooperstown with the Mets. But the flip side of that is that Mike Piazza is as New York as Pizza and Bagels, he was Mr. New York, and it would’ve been a goddamn travesty if he didn’t go into the HoF with the Mets. He chose right, it was just a situation where no outcome was going to please everybody.
