There are a handful of teams in the National Football League that are generally considered to be more cursed than the others. Those teams include, but are not limited to, the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, New York Jets, and Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings’ claims to misery fame, as it were, are bountiful. They’ve played in four Super Bowls but have yet to win one, while also suffering famous playoff losses in 1975, 1998, and 2010.

Being a Vikings fan is such an emotional roller coaster that the local Minneapolis airport sells two different versions of the same t-shirt, in order to appeal to all kinds of Vikings fans: one saying “Disappointed Since 1961,” while the other says “Optimistic Since 1961.”

Unfortunately for Vikings fans, 2024 isn’t shaping up to be a particularly memorable season as the team is currently favored to finish last in the NFC North.

This season could wind up landing on the optimistic side of Vikings fandom, however, as the team drafted University of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with its first-round pick, officially launching a new era of Minnesota Vikings football following the departure of former franchise QB Kirk Cousins, who was the team’s starter from 2018 to 2023.

Just last Friday, in fact, it was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter that McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, signed a four-year, $22 million deal with the Vikings.

McCarthy is expected to begin the start of the season on the bench behind journeyman Sam Darnold. The Minnesota Vikings will kick off their 2024 season with a road matchup against the New York Giants on Sunday, September 8, at 1 p.m. EST.
