A recent minor league baseball game between the Reno Aces and Albuquerque Isotopes produced one of the wildest finishes ever seen. The hectic ending took a few moments to sort out, but in the end, the Aces won the contest, 5-4.

The final play initially appeared to be your typical walk-off win. A cell phone wielding bench player turned it into a very complicated situation.

We’ll set up the ninth-inning scenario. It was an absolutely bizarre scene but stay with us.

Reno entered their final at-bat trailing 4-3. They loaded the bases with one out, giving Connor Kaiser a chance at fireworks.

The shortstop laced a double into the right-centerfield gap. Two runs would easily cross the plate, appearing to give the Aces a 5-4 victory. It wouldn’t be that simple!

Third baseman Ildemaro Vargas hopped up out the dugout prematurely to celebrate. He was reportedly capturing the moment on his cell phone. After entering the playing field, he accidentally collided with teammate baserunner Christian Pache. Despite the fact that Pache was able to get up and cross home plate, the incidental contact was ruled interference.

Rather than scoring the winning run, Pache became the second out of the inning. With players paused on the basepaths, it seemed the Isotopes had somehow averted the dramatic loss. Then, more chaos!

Albuquerque centerfielder Sam Hilliard, believing the game was over, flipped the ball to a fan in the outfield stands. He was unaware of the initial interference which did not produce a dead ball.

The result was an error as the play was still live. The runner that was originally on first base was awarded two bases, allowing him to come around and score. The Aces still won, 5-4!

That play will cause headaches for the team’s official scorer. In the end, the result remained the same.

Ildemaro Vargas, the player that ran onto the field with the cell phone, avoided the embarrassment of costing his team the game thanks to the opposing centerfielder. He did, however, hurt his teammate’s stat line.

Due to the interference and ensuing error, Connor Kaiser had an RBI wiped off the scoresheet. He’ll gladly take the win, but Vargas might owe him a favor after the gaffe.
