Hope springs eternal on Opening Day of the Major League Baseball season every year. Each team starts the season with a clean slate with 162 games with the goal of winning the World Series.
Opening Day is a big day for viewership for the MLB app and MLB.tv services that stream all out-of-market games. But, the technology simply didn’t work when Opening Day got underway on Thursday.
28 of the league’s 30 teams are in action on Thursday, with the Rockies and Rays getting their seasons underway tomorrow. Techincally, the Dodgers and Cubs opened up the season in Japan last week, but this is the official Opening Day.
Games got underway at 3PM, and fans were ready to tune in to watch their favorite teams play. But, and I speak from experience on this as someone who was trying to watch baseball, the app simply wasn’t working. It would claim that your network connection was down, even though the internet was perfectly fine.
People were not happy.
It’s completely unacceptable @MLBTV is down on #OpeningDay @MLBFanSupport pic.twitter.com/jHfdpGRbX0

We pay $150 to get a non-functional @MLBTV app on #OpeningDay
And they wonder why baseball isn't the "national pastime" anymore. #LFGM pic.twitter.com/DjW5dsflH0

The app and website seems to be working as of 5:45PM ET. But, safe to say, people are not thinking highly of the MLB app right now.
