The Arizona State women’s basketball team welcomed in new head coach Molly Miller last week. The 38-year-old leader makes the jump to the Big 12 after dominating at Grand Canyon.
With the Antelopes, she posted a 117-38 overall record, including a near spotless 32-3 mark last season. She led the program to its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in the process.
Unfortunately, it ended with a first-round exit. Grand Canyon fell to Baylor in their opener, 73-60.
Soon after returning home from that loss, she accepted her new role. Molly Miller was named the Sun Devils’ coach on Saturday. She replaces Natasha Adair, who went 29-62 across three seasons in Tempe.
Miller’s already received the support of major NIL donors, one of whom is NBA star James Harden. She’s hoping that backing can help her spark a turnaround more quickly.
But as Miller looked ahead to the future, her former school was forced to begin an offseason coaching search. Grand Canyon president Brian Mueller threw some subtle shade at Miller upon finding her replacement.
Grand Canyon questioned Molly Miller’s loyalty.
The administration wasn’t surprised by the move to Arizona State. Mueller insinuated that she’d been looking for a way out for some time.
“She’s interviewed for jobs after every single year,” he said while introducing replacement Winston Gandy. “We wanted someone who wanted to be here.”
I asked GCU President Brian Mueller if he was caught off guard by Molly Miller’s immediate departure to ASU.
It’s clear he saw it coming.

Interviews were common occurrence according to the Grand Canyon president. He was not shocked to see Molly Miller leave.
He acted quickly in filling the void she left behind on the sidelines. Gandy, an assistant at South Carolina, will get his opportunity to build upon Miller’s foundation.
Brian Mueller is excited for the future with someone who wants to be at Grand Canyon. He delivered one parting shot at his old co-worker before moving on.
