Montana State defeated Montana during the 124th Brawl of the Wild on Saturday. The Bobcats showed the utmost disrespect to the Grizzlies by stomping all over their field after the rivalry college football game.
They earned the right to celebrate with a crucial blocked field goal during the fourth quarter and they did not show any restraint in doing so.
There is nothing better than a heated college football rivalry. It is even better when there are playoff implications on the line!
The Brawl of the Wild is one of the oldest rivalries in college football.
The oldest rivalry in college football history was first played between Princeton and Yale in 1873 but those two schools are no longer heated rivals. Yale first played Harvard in 1875. Princeton played Penn in 1876. You get the idea.
Montana first played Montana State just two decades later in 1897. They are the only two Division-I universities in the Treasure State. The Grizzlies own the all-time series 74-44-5 but the Bobcats won seven of the last 10 and each of the last two— including Saturday.
A back-and-forth game between two top-five FCS programs went down to the wire.
Montana lined up for the game-tying field goal with 13:20 left in the fourth quarter but Missoula-native Zac Crews got up to block the kick for Montana State. That ultimately proved to be the difference.

Both teams scored another touchdown during the fourth quarter. The Bobcats drove 72 yards on 14 plays in six minutes and 53 seconds to take down the clock and win the game 31-28 with a kneel down at the goal line.

It was absolute scenes at the Brawl of the Wild.
Montana State players disgraced Montana’s field.
The celebration was on as soon as the game was over. Players from the visiting team hung around on the field to enjoy the heated rivalry win.
Some of them ran over to the end zone to stomp and dance all over the block lettered ‘MONTANA.’

Some of them also dragged their feet all over the Grizzlies’ logo at the 50-yard-line.

The disrespect was (and is) very real. Montana hates Montana State. Montana State hates Montana.
There will be fans who think the players went too far with their antics but there is no love lost between these two schools and they are always going to celebrate accordingly. This is the Brawl of the Wild.
If you don’t want your rival to disrespectfully stomp all over your logo, you shouldn’t lose!
The Bobcats won the Big Sky Conference championship with the win and secured the No. 2-seed in the FCS Playoffs. The Bobcats dropped to No. 3 with the loss. They are now on a collision course to meet again in Bozeman in the semifinals in December. Tension will be even more heightened than usual because of the disrespect on Saturday!
