A high school basketball game in the state of Nebraska ended in chaos thanks to a premature celebration from the winning side. It’s sparked controversy surrounding the final moments of action.
Was a technical foul warranted? A social media debate roars on given the game’s playoff ramifications.
The contest came between North Millard High School and Lincoln Southeast. There were major playoff implications.
In the A-5 District Finale, the winner would book its ticket to the postseason.
Millard North jumped out to an early first quarter lead before the Knights stormed back. Lincoln Southeast led the Mustangs 36-33 at the halftime break.
That advantage would grow to 56-48 before the start of the fourth quarter. Then, Millard North led a dramatic comeback.
Millard North will play in the Nebraska high school basketball playoffs.
Lincoln Southeast led by a point with seconds remaining on the clock. The Mustangs intercepted an inbound pass, going coast-to-coast for the go-ahead basket.

Lincoln Southeast called a timeout after the play. A clear whistle can be heard. Still, Knights players inbounded the ball and heaved a Hail Mary that missed.
Confusion ensued.
Millard North believed the game was over. Players and fans stormed the court. In reality, the final possession never happened.
Officials put 2.4 seconds back on the clock, honoring the Lincoln Southeast coaching staff’s timeout.
Should a technical foul have been called?
The rulebook states that a technical foul can be awarded for delays in the game and having fans on the court. In this case, it probably was not warranted.
Discretion must be used in these instances, much like we see at the college level. Take the most recent contest between Duke and North Carolina.
UNC hit a go-ahead shot just before the buzzer. Fans rushed onto the floor believing the game had ended. The court was later cleared with time being added to the clock. No technical fouls were assessed.
In the case of Millard North and Lincoln Southeast, it was unclear to spectators whether the game had ended. Even players played through the whistle before the celebration.
Referees handled the situation correctly. There was no intent to impact the game. Officials quickly cleared the court, added time, and allowed the Knights one last opportunity without assessing a technical to the home team.
Lincoln Southeast would not connect on a game-winning attempt. Millard North won the game, 64-63. The Mustangs will now have a spot in the Nebraska high school basketball playoffs.
