Nebraska Basketball Coach Goes Ballistic When Missed Double Dribble Robs His Team Of Victory

Nebraska could not keep pace with Iowa after Tuesday’s college basketball game went to overtime. However, the Cornhuskers were robbed of an opportunity to win (or lose) outright during regulation because a nearby official did not call a blatant double dribble.

The missed call ultimately resulted in an extra five-minute period that quickly got out of hand.

Although one single college basketball play cannot be held responsible for an outcome, this particular sequence of events is incredibly frustrating for a team that was ahead by 12 points with less than 13 minutes left. A lack of officiating completely flipped the final 10 seconds of the game in favor of the home team, Iowa.

Sophomore forward Pryce Sandfort stole the ball away from Nebraska and quickly turned up the court in an attempt to run out the clock. In doing so, he very clearly dribbled, then gathered and stopped his dribble, then re-dribbled. By definition, that is a double dribble. A double dribble would’ve returned possession to the Cornhuskers with a chance to win. Instead, a series of intentional fouls sent the Hawkeyes to the free throw line.

Fred Hoiberg could not believe that Sandfort got away with such a blatant double dribble. He motioned for the call directly in front of the referee, who saw the entire thing unfold right in front of him. No call.

Iowa knocked down a pair of free throws to take a three-point lead. Nebraska hit a game-tying triple at the buzzer and sent the game to overtime.

Overtime did not go well for the Cornhuskers. They lost by 10.

Perhaps the Hawkeyes still hold on to win by one point during regulation if the double dribble was called. We will never know. Unfortunately, Nebraska was never presented with the opportunity to get one final possession, down one, because of the officiating fail. Sandfort got away with one!!
