The South Carolina football program picked up a commitment from rugby player Neff Giwa on Sunday. He officially signed with the school over the weekend and intends to compete for a significant role.

The Gamecocks had recruiting competition for the future offensive lineman. Despite a failed ploy to box out rivals, Shane Beamer secured his target.

Giwa’s story is not like most top-rated recruits. He has never played a snap of competitive football. That did not stop South Carolina from opening up its checkbook.

Neff Giwa is a Gamecock.

Giwa is from Ireland. He’s previously starred in rugby but will now shift his focus to football.

The 6-7, 300-pound athlete turned heads with his ridiculous measurables. Those included a 4.88-second 40-yard dash, as well as a 9′ 10″ broad jump.

South Carolina, a school in search of offensive line talent, believes his skillset can translate to college football success. They were one of the first to offer Giwa in the offseason.

Their competition included Miami, Texas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The Hurricanes were the first school to extend a scholarship offer, and they landed a subsequent visit this month.

The Gamecocks hosted him first. They attempted to pressure the prospect into a quick commitment before he left Columbia.

The Gamecocks reportedly offered a massive NIL deal in hopes of preventing Giwa from visiting the Miami campus. It failed.

The Hurricanes got a look. In the end, South Carolina still won out.

Did NIL play a role?

Most believe the Gamecocks were the highest bidder. Details of his NIL deal are not public, but the reports of a large deal being previously offered support the assertion. The program can probably offer a path to quicker playing time, too.

South Carolina brought in eight new offensive linemen through the transfer portal in its 2026 recruiting class. The position is one of high need for Coach Beamer.

The Gamecocks were one of the nation’s worst performers in terms of sacks allowed last year. They hope the new additions can right the ship.

Giwa is expected to join the team in May. That gives him the summer to prepare for a spot in the rotation.

His lack of experience is concerning. His athleticism, however, could mask some of his deficiencies.

Giwa can move for a man his size. His sub-4.9-second 40-yard dash is quicker than every offensive lineman that ran at the most recent NFL Combine.

Agility and footwork will be beneficial at offensive tackle. It does not, however, guarantee success.

South Carolina was willing to take a chance on the international star in hopes of further bolstering its front five. We’ll see if Neff Giwa is able to move up the depth chart in the offseason to land playing time.
