The New England Patriots are in London this week to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.
But apparently, someone forgot to give Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye a history lesson before he took the flight across the pond.
New England players met with members of the media on Friday, one of whom asked Maye why English fans who don’t have an NFL team they root for should choose the Patriots.
Maye’s answer is maybe the most hilarious, jock-brained thing you’ll hear all year.
Drake Maye asked why English fans should support the Patriots:

“First off, I think it comes in the team name, ‘New England,’ I think it’s easy for UK fans to be attracted to that,” Maye said.
He then added: “The excitement in the team. We’re on the come-up. We’ve got a lot of things to look forward to. A lot of bright futures ahead.”
So uh, let’s just focus on that first part.
Drake, buddy, how much did you learn about New England and its relationship with (Old) England around the time of the American Revolution…
Has anybody told this man about the Boston Tea Party? Does Drake Maye know why the team that he plays for is named the Patriots?!
Reopen the schools! Get this man a book!
If anything, English fans should hate the Patriots.
But that’s not the case. Surprisingly enough, New England is one of the most popular NFL teams across the pond. In all likelihood, this is down to the immense success the Patriots have had in the last 25 years while the NFL was expanding its reach overseas.
Who knows? Maybe Maye really is only something and fans flocked to the Patriots due to the fact that they have “England” in their name.
But as a longtime soccer fan, I can tell you that English sports fans don’t exactly have a warm and fuzzy spot in their hearts for those of us over here in the good ol’ US of A. So I’d hazard a guess that teamless fans won’t be flocking to the Patriots due to their name.
