The New England Patriots have been one of the biggest surprises in the NFL this season, but their Super Bowl hopes may have just taken a huge hit due to off-field issues for star wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

New England sits at 13-3 in its first season under head coach Mike Vrabel, and second-year quarterback Drake Maye has developed into a legitimate NFL MVP candidate.

One reason for Maye’s impressive jump in his second year in the league is the acquisition of Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, in free agency.

Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million deal with New England and has lived up to it in year one, leading the team in both receptions with 82 and yards with 970. However, the Patriots may need to navigate the postseason without him.

Stefon Diggs Charged With Misdemeanor Assault And Felony Strangulation

Boston 25 News reported Tuesday that Diggs is facing charges of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery stemming from an incident on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Diggs’ attorney sought to have the police report impounded on Tuesday, arguing that the details should remain sealed. His attorney also claimed that Diggs is working to settle the situation out of court.

“As we speak, they’re working to come to an agreement on that,” Michael DiStefano said.

Diggs is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, Jan. 23, just two days before a potential appearance in the AFC Championship.

“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

The star wide receiver only recently welcomed a child with superstar rapper Cardi B. Additionally, Diggs is facing a lawsuit from ex-girlfriend, Mia Jones, alleging assault.

The NFL has yet to comment on the latest situation.
