Bergen Catholic was not able to play its high school basketball game against Ramapo as scheduled due to unsafe court conditions. Local police helped make the decision to postpone the top-20 matchup.

This was after a junior varsity player slipped and fell.

It is unclear as to why the police determined the outcome of a high school basketball game in New Jersey but that is what happened. They shut it down.

Bergen Catholic did not play Ramapo.

Bergen Catholic is currently ranked as the No. 2 team in the state of New Jersey. It began the 2025-26 season at 2-0 with dominant wins over Dover and Howard. Ramapo is currently ranked as the No. 19 team in the state of New Jersey. It started the year with a one-point road win over No. 8-ranked Hudson Catholic.

The Crusaders were supposed to play the Raiders in Oradell on Wednesday. The top-20 matchup was going to be a huge litmus test for both teams.

And then it was postponed.

The freshmen game took place as scheduled but junior varsity game was stopped during the first quarter after a player slipped and fell on the court. A recent snowstorm that hit the northern half of the Garden State created unsafe conditions.

Local police canceled the high school basketball game.

According to PJ Potter of njdotcom, local police officers and coaches from both teams got together to discuss the court conditions after the junior varsity player slipped. They ultimately determined the junior varsity game should not and would not continue. They also decided to postpone the varsity game.

I do not know why the local law enforcement had a say in the decision. It seems to me like the coaches are able to determine whether the court is safe on their own, without the help from police, but that’s just me. There are slippery spots or there aren’t. There is a solution or there isn’t. Take a look:

Due to the slippery court, the police and coaches decided not to play the game as schedule. It was postponed to a later date.
