The NBA Revealed 30 New Tournament-Specific Courts And They’re A Headache Waiting To Happen

In its ongoing quest to prove to fans that the regular season is not meaningless, the NBA will debut its first even in-season tournament this week.

But that’s not all.

In addition to the tournament, the league also announced that each will debut a new tournament-specific court.

“The courts, which will be used for Group Play and the Quarterfinals, showcase a bold and distinctive design scheme league-wide, making it instantly clear to fans when a game carries NBA In-Season Tournament implications,” the league said in a press release. The unified look represents the first time that the league has implemented an alternate court for all 30 teams and the first time that any NBA team has played on a fully painted court with no woodgrain details. This will also mark the first time that the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans and Portland Trail Blazers will play on an alternate court in the history of the franchises.”

Now, in theory this is fun and good. New courts are typically pretty cool and a little creativity never hurt anyone.

Until now.

The league unveiled all 30 courts on Monday, and they’re painful just to look at.

We’re not sure who designed each court. But they deserve jail time.

Not only are the courts obnoxiously colored, but many of them are genuinely hard to look at.

They were all just staring at each other in a planning meeting and some guy went “have you guys ever seen Boise State play football,” one fan tweeted.

I’m not saying all of them are bad. But all of them are bad and it’s a terrible idea, and it’s not good,” wrote @Wlohaty.

Others were genuinely concerned about viewers.

Going to be awkward when viewership ratings are terrible because people are catching migraines and nausea by these gaudy floors,” said @PapageorgiouMBO.

You can’t fault the NBA for trying.

And they get a 10/10 for the idea.

The execution, however, was severely lacking.
