There was no shortage of action on the slate on Monday courtesy of the “Sports Equinox” we were treated to, but fans of teams in New York City had an absolutely brutal night thanks to what unfolded when everything was said and done.
October 28th marked just the 31st “Sports Equinox” in history, a term that applies to days when North America’s “Big Four” leagues (the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL) all have at least one game on the schedule.
Fans of sports teams based in New York City (and the surrounding area) had plenty of options to choose from, as the Giants faced off against the Steelers on Monday Night Football, the Knicks hosted the Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden, New York City FC faced off against Cincinnati in a postseason MLS showdown, and the Yankees welcomed the Dodgers to The Bronx for Game 3 of the World Series (the Rangers, Islanders, and Nets all had the night off).
Unfortunately, luck was not on their side.
The Giants fell to the Steelers in primetime by a score of 24-16, Cleveland secured a 110-104 win on the road, the NYC FC failed to score in a 1-0 loss, and the Yankees fell into a 3-0 hole after Los Angeles came away with the 4-2 victory.
According to the folks at Opta Sports, that marks the first time an NFL, NBA, MLB, and MLS team from the same city have all lost a game on the same day.
NYC is the first metro area to lose a game in MLB, MLS, NBA & NFL on the same day (regular season or postseason).

The Yankees will have the chance to stave off elimination when Game 4 unfolds on Tuesday night, and the MLS team they currently share a stadium with will hope to do the same on Saturday.
The Rangers, Islanders, and Nets will also have the chance to help The Big Apple redeem itself, as all three teams will be in action on Tuesday.
