New York Jets fan Ashley Castanio-Gervasi did not win $100,000 during the field goal kicking contest at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. It was a valiant effort but she just barely missed short from 30 yards.
Her miss put an end to one of the most embarrassing sagas in franchise history, which says a lot.
The diehard NFL fan, who attends games in honor of her late farther, was originally banned from the competition because of a technicality. Only after public backlash did the organization change its mind.
The New York Jets wanted her to kick!
This whole thing started back in September. A representative of the New York Jets first noticed Castanio-Gervasi kicking a field goal while at a tailgate during the first month of the season.
The team actively recruited her to participate in a kicking competition.
She of course agreed to participate in the contest and qualified for the finals by making a 20-yard field goal at a team event in October. She was the only woman to make the money round.
At no point did the Jets have an issue with Castanio-Gervasi’s employment up to that point. They allowed her to compete in the qualifying rounds. They were going to let her kick for the cash.
And then, when the organization called her up to confirm the details for this weekend’s competition last week, it suddenly changed its mind. Castanio-Gervasi was no longer allowed to participate because she played soccer in college and currently works as a high school soccer coach— something that she was already upfront about during the initial recruitment.
Ashley Castanio-Gervasi did not make the $100,000 field goal.
The New York Post wrote an article about the kicking contest controversy earlier this week. It exploded.
In fact, the article went so viral that the Jets decided to overturn their ruling. They reinstated Ashley Castanio-Gervasi for the $100,000 kicking contest at halftime of Sunday’s game against the Patriots.
Unfortunately, she missed.
Hand up, I do not know the format of the finals but I think it was essentially a “kick off.” All of the participants kicked a field goal at 25 yards, and those who made their kick got to kick from 30. So on and so forth. Last man or woman standing wins the money.
Castanio-Gervasi missed her attempt from 30 yards.
Ashley we are still super happy that you got the chance to kick a field goal for $100k. #wethefans pic.twitter.com/ym08Wbf7yO

Her kick fell just short of the crossbar.

Even though Castanio-Gervasi did not win the competition, she made the New York Jets do the right thing after they embarrassed themselves yet again. That’s a win in itself.
