Brian Callahan Titans Coach Yell Referee Angry

Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan was not happy with NFL officials during the first half of Sunday’s home game against the Minnesota Vikings. He lost his mind on the head referee after a bad penalty in the end zone took away a massive stop on fourth down.

To say that Callahan was angry would be understated. The 40-year-old was irate and for good reason!

Minnesota got the ball at its own 11-yard-line with just under one minute left in the first quarter. Sam Darnold led the offense 88 yards in 16 plays to set up 2nd-and-goal at Tennessee’s one-yard-line. A pass on second down fell incomplete. Aaron Jones was stopped for no gain on third down.

The Vikings had 4th-and-goal at the one. Darnold dropped back to pass and threw over the middle. Jordan Addison was his intended target but Titans safety Mike Brown blew him up right as the ball hit him in the hands. It fell to the ground incomplete.

However, the NFL officials deemed that Brown’s hit was illegal. They flagged the second-year defensive back for unnecessary roughness, which gave Minnesota a fresh set of downs right at the goal line.

Brian Callahan went ballistic.

As a result of his behavior, the head referee decided to penalize the head coach for unsportsmanlike conduct. Here is the full sequence of events from start to finish:

Upon further review, it seems pretty clear that Brown led with his shoulder and popped Addison square in the chest. Most NFL fans outside of the Land of 10,000 Lakes would agree that the hit was clean.

The Vikings scored a touchdown on the next play. What should’ve been a six-point swing in favor of the home team Titans became a 13-point swing in favor of the visitors after the extra point.
