Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott are basically the same quarterback.

At least that’s what the folks who run the NFL on CBS social media appear to be claiming.

In a graphic that shows some select statistics from the two NFL quarterbacks’ last 50 starts, it sure looks like if you removed the names of the Cowboys’ and Chiefs’ signal callers you wouldn’t be able to tell who was who.

Based on that NFL on CBS graphic, the only category in which Patrick Mahomes is better than Dak Prescott is their records, and that is only by a scant three game margin.

Prescott has been the equal or better of Mahomes in passing touchdowns, interceptions, passing yards per attempt and completion percentage.

Of course, 50 starts, while a nice round number, is also a completely random number when it comes to the NFL schedule. Basically, it’s one game short of being the last three regular seasons.

Something that doesn’t appear on that NFL on CBS graphic is the fact that Prescott missed five regular season games in 2022, one in 2021, and 11 in 2020, so you have to go all the way back to the first game of 2020 to get the past 50 starts for Dak. Mahomes’ last 50 starts began with the first game of the 2021 season.

So, if we look at a comparison of the two quarterbacks based on the past three seasons (51 games), Mahomes is 36-14 and Prescott is 31-14.

As far as the other statistics CBS used, Mahomes threw for 105 touchdowns and 38 interceptions in 51 games, Prescott threw 96 TD passes and 34 interceptions in 45 games; Mahomes passer rating was 98.9, Prescott’s was 101.6; they had and identical 7.5 yards per attempt; while Prescott completed 68.4% of his passes compared to Mahomes at 66.8%.

Dak still beats Mahomes?!

But wait… there’s more.

During those three seasons, Mahomes passed for 14,272 yards, Prescott only 11,825.

Oh yeah, there are also these statistics that got overlooked by NFL on CBS in making their comparison…

Prescott (career): 2-5, 1,962 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 91.8 passer rating.

Mahomes (career): 15-3, 5,135 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 105.8 passer rating.
