Every so often, or perhaps even more than we realize, the element of the unexplainable wanders into our lives and forces us to reckon with it.
Some point to religion and call it a miracle or divine intervention, others chalk it up as fate or coincidence, while some — sometimes seriously, sometimes not — say we live in a simulation. Even actual scientists research and publicly discuss the simulation theory these days. Taking the red pill, indeed.
Regardless of what you think the reason may be, though, it’s undeniable that there’s something incredibly bizarre, almost otherworldly, with Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos and his habit of hitting home runs either preceding or during historical American events.
It all began on August 19, 2020, when Castellanos, then playing for the Cincinnati Reds, infamously hit a home run in the middle of broadcaster Thom Brennaman’s on-air apology for using a homophobic slur.
In the four years since, Castellanos has continued his bizarre trend of going yard while the world turns itself upside down, having done so twice in just the last week: once after the attempt on Trump at his Pennsylvania rally on July 13, on the other on July 22 after President Biden announced he would not be seeking re-election.
Castellanos’ penchant for well/ill-timed home runs (depending on your perspective) has become so distinct that someone has put together a list of all the times it’s happened. While the list is unverified, the original poster claims it to be true, while also pointing out that Castellanos’ first home run as a professional in West Michigan (Single-A) was the day that Osama bin Laden was killed.
That list, according to the tweet, includes:
-Apology for homophobic slur use on broadcast
-Career-threatening injury for Tatis
-Eulogy for WW2 veteran
-A 9/11 tribute video package on the air
-Apology for the opposing team’s coach getting a DUI
-10 minutes after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock
-Dwayne Haskins death
-Memorial Day tribute package on air
-Eulogy for the just deceased PA announcer for the stadium
-Cancer announcement for his team’s owner
-Vin Scully’s death announcement
-An hour after the death of Queen Elizabeth was announced
-A bridge collapse killing several people
-The Oceangate submarine explosion
-3 other celebrity deaths
-2 home runs on the anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
-Attempt on Trump
-Biden withdraws from the race
“All jokes aside, this has to be studied… Nick Castellanos going deep every single time there is a tragedy or something newsworthy is legitimately unlike anything I’ve ever seen in sports history. There can’t be any type of logical explanation. No words,” said one viral tweet about the phenomenon.

Unfortunately for those looking to place a cheeky future bet, the World Series will be over by the time the Presidential Election is held on November 5.
