Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban has some strong thoughts about rumors that could return to coaching, and he didn’t hold back on former quarterback Greg McElroy.
McElroy, who led Saban’s Crimson Tide team to the national championship in 2010, recently stated that he heard Saban was likely to return to the sidelines in the near future.
“This is a little bit out of left field, but the question was asked of me… a very much in-the-know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around and just really, really admire, they seem to think Nick Saban’s not done coaching,” McElroy said. “He’s pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again… If it wasn’t someone notable, I’d never say a word.”
Saban’s daughter Kristen was quick to shoot down those claims. Now Saban has done the same, in no uncertain terms
Nick Saban Says Greg McElroy Spreading Rumors Warrants An A– Kicking
Saban finally addressed the rumors at the recent Nick Saban Legacy Awards in Birmingham, and he left little doubt as to how he felt about McElroy bringing them up.
“You know, I don’t know where that came from,” Saban said when asked about a return to coaching. “Greg McElroy played quarterback for us. And if he’d had done something like that when he was a player, he would have got his ass kicked.”
That answer is consistent with what Saban told Fox News in July.
“There is no opportunity that I know of right now that would entice me to go back to coaching,” he said at the time. “I enjoy what I’m doing. I did it for 50 years. I loved it. I loved the relationship with the players. I loved the competition. But, you know, it’s another station of life now.”
Saban, 73, retired following the 2023 college football season with the sixth-most wins in FBS history with 292.
