Sparks flew at the end of Tuesday night MACtion in a game between Central Michigan and Northern Illinois. Punches were thrown as CMU and NIU got into a postgame fight on Halloween night.

The scary scene escalated quickly causing officials and coaches to get involved.

The Chippewas and Huskies faced off in an entertaining contest this week. Jim McElwain’s CMU team came out on fire, starting the scoring on its opening drive.

They’d keep the pedal to the metal in that first half, taking a 24-3 lead into the halftime break. That advantage would extend to 37-11 midway through the third quarter.

The Huskies made things interesting late, however, in their attempt to overcome that four-score deficit.

NIU scored three touchdowns over the final 25 minutes of play, pulling to within six points and giving the offense a chance to win. Unfortunately, the Huskies threw a pick on a potential game-winning drive.

Tensions were high after that final result.

A postgame scuffle went on for some time as players wrestled up and down the field. Near the end of the pushing and shoving, punches were thrown.

Cameras panned to head coach Jim McElwain during the incident, and he was visibly peeved. Other members of the staff did their best to separate the squads.

In the end, NIU and CMU players ran off the field and headed back to their respective locker rooms, effectively ending the fight. It was certainly an interesting start to midweek MACtion.
