A district attorney in the state of North Carolina is seeking evidence of an alleged punch thrown after a UNC rivalry win over Duke.

Jeff Nieman took to social media days after Jon Scheyer’s accusation in search of video. To this point, it has not been found.

The Tar Heels beat the Blue Devils in an exciting college basketball contest this past weekend. Despite not leading until their final shot, UNC got the win.

Seth Trimble sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to secure a double-digit comeback. The Heels trailed by as many as 13 early and by 11 in the second half.

North Carolina stormed the basketball court in celebration. Jon Scheyer says a staff member was injured before exiting to the locker room.

Jon Scheyer says a punch was thrown.

“I think court storming is fine. I don’t have any issue with court storming. (We) just shouldn’t have people getting punched in the face,” Scheyer said in his postgame press conference.

“They won. They should celebrate. They want to court storm, court storm. But just let’s get our guys off safely, that’s it.”

Scheyer alleged that one of his staff members was punched in the face by a North Carolina fan. He doubled down on the accusation while providing an update on the staffer Monday.

“That was a very unsafe situation for our staff, our family, and our players,” Scheyer said in an ACC Coaches Call. “(The staff member) is doing better…

“He got hit in the face, got trampled. He looked like he’d been in a complete brawl after the game… That should never happen.”

North Carolina DA seeks answers.

Jeff Nieman wants video evidence of the alleged punch. He believes footage exists if the incident truly unfolded as Jon Scheyer describes.

A clip of Duke player Isaiah Evans swatting a phone in a spat with a North Carolina fan has surfaced. To this point, however, no video of a punch directed at the Blue Devils coaching staff has been seen.

Nieman continued on to write, “I’m sure there was a lot of shoving and incidental contact, but what particularly interests me is evidence of multiple people being ‘punched in the face.'”

The Orange County DA lives in Chapel Hill and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He wants to hold Scheyer responsible for potential misinformation.

Scheyer has been vocal about his disdain for court storming dating back to a similar incident following a 2024 matchup with Wake Forest. He blasted the act after a fan collided with star player Kyle Filipowski on the floor.

“When are we going to ban court storming?” Scheyer asked after that loss to spark a nationwide debate. To this point, it remains a prominent celebration though steps have been taken in regard to security protocols.

UNC believes it did its duty in allowing Duke to exit the court safely. It still received a $50,000 fine from the ACC.

The Tar Heels have been punished for their actions. Jeff Nieman wants Duke held accountable if Jon Scheyer’s claims are false.
