Kirk Herbstreit did not expect Oklahoma to score a single touchdown during the Red River Shootout Rivalry on Saturday and he was absolutely right. ESPN’s color commentator correctly predicted the Sooners’ awful performance in Dallas with more than eight minutes left in the second quarter.

It was a rough showing from a team that will need a lot of things to go right to get back into the mix for the College Football Playoff.

To be fair, Oklahoma’s offensive struggles were a byproduct of personnel, or rather, a lack thereof. Wide receivers Jayden Gibson, Jalil Farooq, Nic Anderson, Andrew Anthony and Deion Burks were ruled out before kickoff. Tight end Kade McIntyre was also unavailable. The injuries did not put true freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. in a position to succeed against the No. 1 team in the country.

He completed 19 of 30 pass attempts for only 148 yards without a touchdowns. The Sooners ran for just 89 yards — total — on 38 carries. Hawkins was running for his life all afternoon.

To make matters worse, Oklahoma only converted four of its 15 attempts on third down and fumbled twice. It also committed seven penalties and punted six times.

Texas won the game 34-3.

Herbstreit, a certified ball-knower, knew what was going to happen after just 20 minutes of play. He was on the call for ABC and correctly predicted the final outcome long before halftime.

The 55-year-old color commentator said on air that the Sooners did not look like a team that could find the end zone. That was with eight minutes and 25 seconds left in the second quarter.

Sure enough, Oklahoma did not score a touchdown.

At that point, when the prediction was made, the Sooners had punted twice and kicked a pair of field goals. One missed. They did not even score another point, let alone find the end zone.
