Lane Kiffin is officially headed to LSU. He bailed on his Ole Miss playoff team to lead the Tigers into 2026.
The head coach provided a statement following his tumultuous exit from Oxford. He attempted to play the victim while throwing Mississippi administration under the bus.
Kiffin’s potential departure has been a talking point for weeks. His name emerged as a top candidate for openings at both LSU and Florida.
Speculation heated up after the coach’s family took private visits to each campus. Ole Miss braced for a coaching change while supposedly offering Kiffin an ultimatum.
The coach made his decision after an Egg Bowl win over rival Mississippi State. He is off to Baton Rouge.
Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss.
He was not allowed to say goodbye. Marty Smith of ESPN caught up with the coach at the airport. Kiffin informed him of what transpired in the moments that followed his decision.
“I totally respect Keith [Carter]’s decision,” the coach said before boarding his plane. “He asked me not to come to the meeting, which I totally understand. I don’t know that I necessarily agree… but he has to live here and it’s a little different when you’re the AD.”
Kiffin later released a statement echoing that sentiment. Administration, according to the coach, was the reason he was unable to address his team before bailing for LSU.

In that statement, Kiffin alluded to players insisting that he stay on to lead a possible national title run.
“I was hoping to complete a historic six-year run with this year’s team by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs,” the note read.
“My request to do so was denied by (Vice Chancellor of Athletics) Keith Carter despite the team also asking him to allow me to keep coaching them so they could better maintain their high level of performance.”
Kiffin suggested that players wanted him to stay for at least one game more. He was barred from doing so. He played the victim after turning his back on Ole Miss.
His former team is now speaking out.
Ole Miss football players call Kiffin a fraud.

A number of Rebels deny asking the coach to stay. After learning of Lane Kiffin’s decision, many were ready to move on, contrary to the coach’s statement.
That was not the message you said in the meeting room. Everybody that was in there can vouch on this . https://t.co/tssQmvGgQ3

Ole Miss reporter Ben Garrett spoke further on the final meeting between Kiffin and a select group of players. They asked him to leave, according to the insider.
“At the end of the day, (Kiffin) did address the leadership council,” Garrett said. “I’ve talked to the players in that room… They told (him), ‘Just leave now.'”
Garrett and Kiffin have history. The coach confronted the reporter earlier this year for comments made about his pending LSU decision.
Kiffin wants to be the good guy despite his treachery. Ole Miss football players aren’t letting it slide. He is not the victim, rather, he’s lying in the bed he made.
