The men’s cycling road race at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris is an attritional affair.

Eventual champion Remco Evenepoel of Belgium completed the 272-kilometer race in just under six hours and 20 minutes. Riders are constantly eating and drinking throughout the race in order to stay fueled. So, as you can imagine, sometimes nature calls.

That’s what happened to German rider Nils Politt at the mid-way point of the race at the legendary Paris restaurant

Café des 2 Moulins in order to take a pee break before being mobbed by several adoring fans.

Cafe des 2 Moulin rose to fame thanks to its appearance in the 2001 movie Amélie, in which it is the workplace of the title character. It’s now one of Paris’s top tourist destinations.

Politt, a 30-year-old who won a stage of the Tour de France in 2021, spent much of the race on the attack before eventually finishing in 70th position, nearly 20 minutes behind Evenepoel.

Evenepoel, meanwhile, fresh off a third-place finish in the Tour de France, became the first male rider in history to win both the Olympic time trial and the road race.

“What a place to win this. Honestly, I feel sick. So proud to win this and to be the first ever to double it, history, no ?,” the 24-year-old said after the race.

“You are never sure enough. I felt that his legs were getting empty and I knew the kicker where I dropped him was a kicker that really suited me. It was just pushing, pushing, pushing to the line.
“I really feel sick from the effort especially with the stressy moment with 4km to go, I got a straight puncture. I had to change bike, bit of stress but I had time enough.”
