Wicked weather wreaked havoc on the high school football playoffs across Southern California on Friday. Amidst all of the chaos, Orange Lutheran pulled out a one-point win over St. John Bosco.

It is one of the biggest upsets of all-time!

A high school football team that lost more games than it won during the regular season took down a historic powerhouse. Even Carson Palmer could not believe what happened.

An atmospheric river caused torrential rains across Southern California.

The greater Los Angeles area sees approximately 34 days of precipitation, annually. Every so often, an atmospheric river brings multiple days of rain to the region as a long, narrow band of moisture carries huge amounts of water vapor toward the nearby San Gabriel Mountains, like a river in the sky. Hence the name. When one of those bands of moisture hits Southern California, the moist air is forced upward by the mountains, which causes the water to release as rain. Today you learned.

One of those atmospheric rivers hit the region on Friday during the first round of the CIF Southern Section high school football playoffs. It was raining all over Los Angeles.

The entire region was soaked.

It was absolutely pouring for 60 minutes, from Laguna to Pasadena.

There was no way to escape the storm.

Fans did know how to act.

This is not something Californians are used to.

It was wet. Clearly.

Orange Lutheran pulled a massive high school football upset over St. John Bosco.

Bellflower, California was not exempt to the weather. The rain was really coming down as kickoff between the Lancers and the Braves neared closer and it did not stop throughout all four quarters.

St. John Bosco, the reigning state champion, was ranked No. 4 in the entire country at 9-1. Its opponent barely squeaked into the playoffs at 2-8 because of its strength of schedule.

Orange Lutheran played the Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, 12 and 18-ranked teams in California and the No. 2-ranked team in Arizona during the regular season. It also beat the No. 4-ranked team in Florida and No. 18-ranked Rancho Cucamonga but had to forfeit both wins because of a rules violation involving an ineligible player. The Lancers “technically” won four games but only got credit for two.

They still snuck into the postseason because of the playoffs points system and took full advantage of their opportunity.

St. John Bosco beat Orange Lutheran 48-0 in the regular season. Orange Lutheran beat St. John Bosco 20-19 in the the CIFSS playoffs on Friday. The fourth quarter was insane.

The Lancers took a 20-13 lead with just under nine minutes left on a WILD pick-six.

The Braves blocked a punt with two minutes remaining to secure incredible field position.

Bosco got into the end zone on the very next play but missed the extra point to tie the game.

Its onside kick attempt was recovered by Orange Lutheran.

Game over. Santa Margarita head coach Carson Palmer was shocked to learn his team will play Orange Lutheran in the next round, and not St. John Bosco. Look at his face!

One of the biggest upsets in high school football history took place during an atmospheric river. It never rains in Southern California!
