One of the subplots of the NBA season, as it so often is, has nothing to do with the actual players, but the one reporting on them, namely, Shams Charania and Adrian Wojnarowski.

Similar to Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport over in the NFL, Shams and Woj are scoopers. They live and breathe trying to be the first to break basketball news, whether that be reporting on a trade, a free agency signing, head coach hirings/firings, and so on.

With NBA free agency yet to begin, however, the pair’s focus has been on the various head coaching searches unfolding throughout the league, particularly the Los Angeles Lakers.

Last week, Woj reported that the Lakers were preparing a contract offer for Dan Hurley, who he said was always Los Angeles’ first choice. Hurley wound up rejecting the Lakers, and now reports indicate that they’re turning their attention to JJ Redick, who Shams has been positioning as the favorite for the job.

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, June 13, Shams appeared on the program to both provide and update and take a bit of a victory lap over Woj by detailing how long Redick has been in the Lakers’ thoughts.

McAfee then ended the segment by gushing about Shams, who he says is The Pat McAfee Show‘s “NBA guy.”

“Shams is our NBA guy. Completely OK with other NBA guys being our guy, but Shams has been our guy for literally half a decade,” McAfee said in a clear reference to Woj.

Unfortunately for the NBA, the ongoing professional rivalry between Shams and Woj might be the most exciting thing happening around the league these days as the NBA Finals have been totally one-sided, with the Boston Celtics taking a commanding 3-0 lead over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, June 12, which is a deficit that’s been proven to be virtually impossible to come back from.
