Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes put a severe dent in his team’s hopes of completing an historic Super Bowl three-peat when he accidentally injured teammate Rashee Rice.

The incident occurred after Mahomes threw an interception against the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday. Mahomes attempted to make up for his mistake by tackling Chargers corner Kristian Fulton. But instead, Mahomes went flying into Rice’s knee, causing him to suffer a potentially season-ending injury.

Mahomes spoke with reporters about the incident on Thursday and revealed the first thought on his mind when he realized he’d injured Rice.

“I didn’t notice it in the moment, I was more worried about trying to get the ball,” Mahomes said of the play. “Obviously, was just trying to make a play, and it happens whenever you’re trying to make tackles.

“I mean, when I saw the replay, I felt like s— that I hit Rashee,” he continued. “I mean, I wasn’t worried about myself. I was worried about, hopefully, his injury and hopefully it wasn’t as bad as it looked because I was the one that hit him.”

Rashee Rice Might Be Able To Return To Chiefs Before End Of Season

Initial concerns were that Rice suffered a season-ending ACL injury on the play. But that may not actually be the case.

“As far as the guys not practicing today, Rashee is really the only one,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said on Thursday. “Rashee’s situation is we’re getting the swelling out of his knee, and then he’s got further tests next week. So (I) really don’t have anything to tell you. From there, we’ll see how these tests go next week and once the swelling is down there.”

Rice has had a tumultuous last 12 months.

He developed into one of the NFL’s top wide receivers at the end of the 2023 season. But legal troubles tainted his offseason.

Rice returned to the field looking like a star to start this season. But now he could face a lengthy recovery, and a bizarre incident involving his mom is also making the rounds.

It just goes to show there’s never a dull moment these days with the Kansas City Chiefs.
