New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso said on Monday morning that he is thankful to be alive after surviving a “brutal” car accident on Sunday. His wife followed it up on Monday afternoon with video from the scene and it is rather surreal.

According to Alonso, he was in his truck on his way to spring training in Tampa, Florida when “the next thing he knew, he was kicking his windshield in trying to get out of a flipped-over car.” Further expanding on the accident, Alonso said that he was driving through a green light when another vehicle ran a red light and caused the accident.

He was the only one in his truck when it occurred and all involved parties left the scene with only minor injuries, if any at all. Alonso said that his wife was in a separate car behind him and called the police.

Haley, who married Pete last year, posted video of the scene after the accident. It is terrifying.

In her post on Instagram, Haley provided further context as to what happened and encouraged people to wear a seatbelt and pay attention to the road. She said that her husband’s truck flipped three times and slid down the road.

Once Haley got to the truck, she could not see the inside of the truck and screamed for Pete to answer her. He was able to respond to her cries and let her know that he was going to kick out the windshield to escape.

Haley, like her husband, is very grateful that things did not play out differently.

“It’s a miracle that he’s safe after this horrifying of an accident. I thought I watched my husband die in front of me and I will never forget that feeling. This could’ve easily unfolded much differently and that’s what is so scary. Life can be taken from us in an instant. Please do not drive distracted and wear your seatbelt.”

Her full thoughts and the video are truly a reminder of the fragility of life. Alonso having only one scratch on his arm after such a terrible accident is a miracle.
