The Philadelphia 76ers Could Get Rid Of Paul George Just 30 Games After Signing Max Contract

Just seven months ago, Paul George signed a four-year, $211 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers that saw him form what some believed was the best core in the NBA next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Fast forward a bit and George has played in just 13 games with Embiid and only 10 games with both Embiid and Maxey.

George himself has played in only 30 of Philadelphia’s 48 games and is currently out while dealing a thumb injury. Now it appears he may have already played his last game for the organization, with the Golden State Warriors emerging as a potential suitor.

Golden State Warriors Have Made Calls To Inquire About Paul George Trade

Shams Charania of ESPN reported the Warriors, who also pursed George in the offseason, have reached out to Philadelphia in order to inquire about potential trade options.

“The Warriors are legitimately calling about every all-star player,” Charania said during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. “Paul George, they have called on … they are making calls. They are dead set on trying to find another star player – superstar player – with Stephen Curry.”

Now, whether or not Philly is receptive to those calls is another matter. George has struggled mightily in the 30 games he has played. He’s averaging just 17.1 points per game, the lowest in his career since 2012-13 (not counting the six games he played the in 2014-15), and he’s struggled to mesh on the court next to Maxey.

Then there’s the matter of salary matching. Golden State would have to find a way to match George’s $49 million salary this season. Assuming Curry is untouchable, the only way they could feasibly do that is involving Andrew Wiggins and/or Draymond Green. It’s hard to imagine Philly is overly interested in either of those players.

So there’s every chance this deal doesn’t come to fruition. But it’s also not entirely farfetched.
