Philadelphia Eagles DB Isaiah Rodgers Admits He Intentionally Caused Teammate To Muff Punt

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Isaiah Rodgers might soon find himself searching for work after he admitted to intentionally causing teammate Cooper DeJean to muff a punt against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The play occurred late in the first quarter with the Eagles aready trailing 14-0. After a defensive stop, the Bucs punted the ball away to the Eagles. But a Buccaneers player crashed into DeJean as he attempted to field the punt, causing him to drop the ball.

Officials initially called kick-catch interference on Tampa Bay, but then overturned the call when they determined Rodgers shoved the Bucs player into DeJean.

After the game, Rodgers admitted that he intentionally shoved the Tampa Bay player because he didn’t understand the rules.

“Me being a gunner in my career, I know not to hit the punt returner. So, with me guarding him, I thought to myself, ‘You know, I’m going to push him into the returner and get the flag,’” Rodgers told reporters. “You know, that’s part of the game.

“I kind of thought it was going to be a flag, which it was, but they eventually picked it up and said because I pushed him. I never heard that before, but you know, it is what it is.”

That’s a stunning admission from someone who not only plays in the NFL, but regularly plays on special teams.

From my couch, I immediately said that the Bucs player was pushed into DeJean before the officials overturned the call. So you’d expect someone on the coverage team to actually know that.

Tampa Bay scored a touchdown to go up 21-0 just moments later and the Eagles were never able to dig out of the hole, eventually losing 33-16.

Surprisingly, this isn’t even the biggest blunder of Rodgers’ career. He was suspended for the entire 2023 NFL season after he was found to have placed bets on NFL games.

So maybe the Eagles should’ve seen this one coming. It doesn’t appear as if good decision-making is his forte.
