Former NFL wide receiver Plaxico Burress had some interesting comments to make about the New England Patriots and recently drafted passer Drake Maye.
He suggested that the organization is having second thoughts about taking him with the third overall pick, with that insinuation being based off of comments made by head coach Jerod Mayo. Does the staff regret the selection?
Maye was the third-best signal caller in the 2024 draft class by most accounts, falling below only No. 1 pick Caleb Williams and No. 2 choice Jayden Daniels.
The UNC product played two full seasons in Chapel Hill, throwing for more than 8,000 yards while boasting a 63-to-16 touchdown to interception ratio.
He was named ACC Player of the Year in 2022, finishing 10th in the Heisman voting.
That production caught the attention of the Patriots, who parted ways with former first round pick Mac Jones over the offseason. Looking for an immediate replacement, the front office reportedly turned down numerous offers for that No. 3 pick in order to get their guy.
Less than a month later, Plaxico Burress is hinting at buyer’s remorse.

“That doesn’t sound good to me,” the wideout said in response to Jerod Mayo’s initial thoughts on his new passer. “Basically, what you’re saying is, we might have drafted the wrong guy… He may not be as good as we thought he was.”
Mayo said that Drake Maye “has a lot to work on” after seeing his first practice sessions, which doesn’t seem too out of the ordinary when talking about a rookie.
Then again, maybe they had reservations going into the draft about Maye’s abilities considering they selected another QB behind him in Joe Milton.
It’s likely much too early to speak on Drake Maye’s upside, or the staff’s feelings about his future in New England. Still, the seemingly negative early reviews have placed doubt in the minds of some, especially Plaxico Burress!
