Minor league teams frequently harness theme nights in an attempt to drum up attendance, which often results in the creation of an alternate jersey inspired by the promotion. That’s led to plenty of awesome creations, but it’s very, very hard to top the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles getup the Providence Bruins will be rocking in a couple of games.
Minor league baseball has really cornered the market when it comes to the many creative promotional events the marketing teams tasked with luring fans to the ballpark have managed to dream up, but there’s no shortage of similar stunts in the hockey world based on the various schemes AHL teams have also taken advantage of.
The Providence Bruins, Boston’s AHL affiliate, has a calendar overflowing with the various giveaways fans who flock to Amica Mutual Pavillion (the arena true New Englanders will always refer to as “The Dunk”) for a game can take advantage of over the course of the season.
That venue is attached to the Rhode Island Convention Center, and each year, that second building hosts tens of thousands of people who head to the state’s capital for Rhode Island Comic-Con, which has gotten underway toward the beginning of November since it was held for the first time in 2012.
The team commonly referred to as the Baby B’s will be paying tribute to that annual gathering by hosting Rhode Island Comic-Con Weekend when they face off against the Utica Comets on Friday night before closing out a home and away back-to-back with the Bridgeport Islanders on Sunday afternoon.
The players who take the ice in both of those games will be wearing jerseys inspired by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and as someone who’s come across plenty of sick alternates in my day, I’m not sure I’ve encountered any that rival the green-and-yellow sweater featuring the somewhat infamous “Meth Bear” logo rocking a mask on the front and a turtle shell on the back.
Out of the ooze and onto the ice. 🐢🧊
We’re going green as the world’s most fearsome hockey team in these turtle-powered sweaters for @ricomiccon Weekend! 🥷 pic.twitter.com/mc2omaTbfE

The Bruins are offering fans a chance to land a similarly themed hat if they purchase a multi-game package that also includes Comic-Con tickets, but it sadly doesn’t appear the jersey will be sold to the general public.
With that said, the team has historically auctioned off theme night jerseys for charity, and there’s little doubt these are going to fetch a pretty penny if they give people the chance to bid on them.
