Jack Kenneff is no longer committed to play college baseball at Quinnipiac University. The highly-touted right-handed pitcher and shortstop recruit wants to play two sports on the next level.
However, the Bobcats do not have a football team.
As a result, Kenneff has re-opened his commitment for college baseball with the intention to also play college football at whatever school gives him the opportunity. I cannot say I have ever seen this before.
Who is Jack Kenneff?
Jack Kenneff hails from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He plays three varsity sports at Manheim Township high school and carries a 3.9 GPA. Not too shabby!
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound quarterback also plays baseball and basketball.
Kenneff has long been considered a Division-I prospect on the diamond. Perfect Game grades him as a potential top 10 round pick in the MLB Draft with real potential to be a star in college. His fastball tops out at 91 miles per hour with an infield velocity of 89 miles per hour. He also turns on the ball with a maximum exit velocity of about 85 miles per hour as a hitter, slashing .415/.477/.528 last season.
Kenneff also plays football for the Blue Streaks. They went 10-2 and won a league championship during the fall. Their starting quarterback completed 68% of his passes for 2,130 yards and 25 touchdowns with a 113 passer rating. He also ran for six touchdowns on the ground.
Kenneff’s dominant senior year put him in a unique situation. A guy who was once considered only to be a top shortstop recruit is now of interest as a quarterback.
Quinnipiac lost a baseball recruit because of football.
Quinnipiac University is located in Hamden, Connecticut. It enrolls approximately 10,000 students with 6,500 undergrads. The Bobcats are members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference but they compete in only seven men’s varsity sports and 14 women’s varsity sports on the Division-I level.
The seven men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer and tennis. Not football.
Quinnipiac’s baseball team most recently made the NCAA Tournament in 2019 as MAAC champions. It is a solid program. It is not a powerhouse program.
Jack Kenneff initially committed to play baseball for the Bobcats as one of the highest-rated recruits in school history. He has since re-opened his recruitment because of a desire to also play college football.
Even two-time Super Bowl champion Chad Henne shared his post on X to help spread the word.
“Coaches check out Jack! 3 sport athlete, high IQ, talented QB with plenty of upside! 💪🏼💪🏼”
This is a very exciting opportunity for Kenneff. It is a huge bummer for Quinnipiac, which just lost its best baseball recruit because the university does not have a football team.
