‘Raygun‘ was the highlight and the lowlight of the first-ever breakdancing competition at the Olympics. She stole the show with a bizarre performance that failed to score a single point over three separate rounds.
However, the Aussie B-girl was met with a hero’s welcome at the Closing Ceremony after going insanely viral on social media.
Rachael Gunn, better known by her break-girl tag, made a name for herself in Paris for better or for worse. All publicity is good publicity, especially in a “sport” that doesn’t often get international coverage, so it was a pretty major win despite the blowout loss. She failed to receive a single point from the judges during all three of her matches against the United States, France and Lithuania, and lost 54-0.
Breakers are scored on technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality and originality. Olympic judge Martin Gilian explained that “her level was maybe not as high as the other competitors.”
Even though Raygun didn’t win the competition, she won the hearts of the world.
Unfortunately, the 36-year-old receive a lot of hate for the Olympics performance. Raygun was ruthlessly mocked for her ~unique~ dance moves and her outfit. She didn’t care.
Raygun, who has a PhD in cultural studies and a bachelor’s degree in contemporary music, fired back at the haters in defense of her scoreless showing. It was intentionally different. The point was to stand out.
Raygun certainly stood out at the Olympics!
Her countrymen and women loved it. They celebrated Raygun as if she won a gold medal at the Closing Ceremony on Sunday night.
Australia embraced their B-girl as a national hero.
The Paris closing ceremony is unfolding with the Aussie athletes basking in the glory of Raygun’s heroics in the lead in. Got to love the way they have got around her https://t.co/tNh4Kn3UsE pic.twitter.com/BiKNoVrXtu

If that wasn’t iconic enough, a spontaneous breaking performance broke out during the actual ceremony. Hundreds of athletes from all over the world gathered to watch the B-girls and B-boys do their thing. Raygun was among the group who hopped in the circle!
So Breaking had a mixed Olympic debut… but at the #ClosingCeremony there’s a spontaneous performance which is getting more attention than the show itself 😂 #Paris2024 pic.twitter.com/BRNzIqVRGi

Breaking/breakdancing will not return to the Olympics for the foreseeable future, if ever. It seems unlike that another host country will bring it back.
Assuming that Paris was indeed it, we are so fortunate to have witnessed Raygun in her prime!
