Robert Griffin III spoke publicly on his firing from ESPN this week while appearing on the Rich Eisen Show. Eisen, also a former employee of the network, expressed both sympathy and encouragement while diving into the ins and outs of the split.
RGIII, while thankful for his time with the Worldwide Leader in Sports, dropped a bit of a bomb during his interview. He was completely stunned when he heard the news of his being let go.
Griffin, who was hired three years ago and still had two years remaining on his contract, says he’d already been assigned a team for the college football season.
“I am grateful to ESPN for all the opportunities they gave me,” the former NFL QB said. “For me getting to work on Monday Night Countdown… It was a dream come true… But for me, to say that I was surprised – I’d already been assigned a team, Rich, in college football. I was going to be back with my guys… It hurt me.
“We were so close, and we were getting a chance to rekindle that fire. That had already been assigned. So, to answer you question fully, yes, I was surprised.”
Robert Griffin III’s spot on college football broadcasts will now be assumed by Louis Riddick.
The surprise firing was made public last week, with news also coming out that Sam Ponder would lose her job to be replaced by Mike Greenberg.
RGIII wasn’t the only one stunned by the news. Former co-worker Paul Finebaum said he had “no earthly idea why” the move was made.
But while one door has closed, another is opening.
RGIII plans to move forward with his podcast Outta Pocket.

His first guest since the EPN firing? Deion Sanders!
It seems we’ll be seeing a lot more of Griffin and his wife on social media channels this football season as they travel the country for inside looks into the top programs. That’s music to many fans’ ears.
He’s not dwelling on the surprise firing. Instead, he’s finding new ways to bring entertainment to viewers!
